“ItwasntpartofyassignenttolookatthequestionoffactintheWennerstraffair,butIdidfollowthetriandhavetoaditthatIwasactuallyfbbergasted.Thethingfeltwrong,anditstotallyoutofcharacterforMikaelBlokvisublishsoethingthatseestobesooffthewall.”

Sanderscratchedheeck.Frodelookedpatient.AranskywonderedwhetherheightbeistakenorwhetherSanderreallywasunsurehowtocontinue.TheSanderhekneasneverunsureorhesitant.Finallysheseeedtoakeupherind.

“LeteputitthiswayandItakeitthatwerespeakinginconfidence”Aranskynodded.“Idontknowanythingaboutthisparticuratter,butIdoknowbeyondanydoubtthatinothersituationsWennerstrhasacteddishonestly.TheWennerstrcasehasseriouslyaffectedMikaelBlokvistslife,andIhaveaninterestindisceingwhethertheresanythinginyourspecutions.”

Theconversationhadtakenanunexpectedtu,andAranskywasinstantlyonthealert.WhatFrodewasaskingwasforMiltonSecuritokearoundinacasethathadalreadybeenconcluded.AcaseinwhichthereayhavebeensoesortofthreattotheanBlokvist,andiftheytookthison,MiltonwouldriskcollidingwithWennerstrsregientofwyers.AranskywasnotintheleastfortedbythethoughtoftuingSanderlooseinsuchasituation,likeacruiseissileoutofcontrol.

Itwasnoterelyaatterofconceforthepany.SanderhadadepinthatshedidnotwantAranskytoactassoesortofworriedstepfather,andsincetheiragreeenthehadbeencarefulnevertobehavelikeone,butinrealityhewouldneverworryingabouther.HesoetiescaughthiselfparingSandertohisdaughters.Heconsideredhiselfagoodfatherwhodidnotinterfereunnecessarilyintheirlives.ButheknewthathewouldnottolerateitifhisdaughtersbehavedlikeSanderorlivedthelifesheled.

InthedepthsofhisCroatianorpossiblyBosnianorArenianhearthehadneverbeenabletoshedtheconvictionthatSanderslifewasheadingfordisaster.Sheseeedtheperfectvictiforanyonewhowishedherill,andhedreadedtheoinghewouldbeawakenedbythenewsthatsoeonehaddoneherhar.

ErikaBergerlookedupquizzicallywhenanapparentlyfreezingBlokvistcaeintotheeditorialoffice.MillenniusofficeswereinthecentreofthetrendysectionofGtgatan,abovetheofficesofGreenpeace.Therentwasactuallyabittoosteepfortheagazine,buttheyhadalgreedtokeepthespace.
