BlokvistsconversationwithVangerthedaybeforehadbeenilluinatingononeotherpoint.FrothestarttheoldanhadtalkedtoBlokvistaboutsoanyebersofhisfailyinaconteptuousanddenigratinganner.Itstruckhiasodd.BlokvistwonderedwhetherthepatriarchssuspicionsabouthisfailyhadwarpedhisjudgeentintheatterofHarrietsdisappearance,butnowhewasstartingtorealisethatVangerhadadeanaazinglysoberassessent.

HaraldVangerstudiededicineinUppsaandndedalostiediatelyincirclesthatwereobsessedwithracehygieneandracebiology.ForatieheworkedattheSwedishRaceBiologyInstitute,andasaphysicianhebecaeaproinentcapaignerforthesterilisationofundesirableeleentsinthepopution.
